Wine Country Inn Annouces Olive Oil Taste-off Winner

ST. HELENA, Calif. November 15, 2008 – Three celebrity judges chose Harris Ranch Napa Valley’s Rutherford Hillside Estate Reserve olive oil as the winner in The Wine Country Inn’s olive oil taste-off held Saturday at the Inn. The organic extra virgin olive oil will now become the Inn’s featured olive oil in 2009, used by the Inn’s chef and available to guests for purchase.
Jim Smith, The Wine Country Inn’s innkeeper, said the olive oil tasting was done to expose guests to more than just NapaValley wine. “The Napa Valley produces some of the greatest wines in the world,” Smith said. “Most people don’t realize that olives have thrived here for decades, and local producers make some awesome olive oils.”
The olive oil tasting was the culmination of The Wine Country Inn’s four-day Ode to the Olive celebration, in which guests were exposed to different types of olives and olive oils, special olive-related recipes, and special olive oil tasting events. Tasting judges included Smith, Chef Lars Kronmark of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), and Diane DeFilipe, an expert on Italian cooking and olive oils through her Italian tour company, Let’s Go Cook Italian.
Gingy Harris Gable, who with her brother, Jody, own and run Harris Ranch Napa Valley, said the company’s many olive oil awards helps validate their effort. “It makes it all worthwhile because so much work goes into every single bottle,” Gable said.
